Application Process

The application deadline is in mid-October for the following summer. To be eligible for NYIE, students must be enrolled full-time at Ole Miss as degree-seeking students. Students should be juniors or seniors at the time of their participation. Student must have a minimum 2.75 GPA. Applicants should be highly motivated, reliable, adaptable, and possess strong written and oral communication skills. The program director, faculty, staff, and past NYIE participants will interview each candidate and review his or her application packet. Selections will be made in early-November.

Applicants must…

  • be degree-seeking University of Mississippi students who will be enrolled in their junior or senior year at time of participation, or a May graduate applying for the summer
  • have a minimum of a 2.75 GPA
  • have a strong resume reflecting work, volunteer and/or leadership experience
Application packets must be submitted by November 11, 2016 at 5:00pm.

The application packet must include:

  • Application: Include a completed application, including the signature of your departmental chairperson.
  • Transcript: Attach a copy of your most recent, complete unofficial transcript.
  • Sample Cover Letter: Provide a sample cover letter to a prospective employer in appropriate formal letter format. (Tip: It might be easier to write it for a real job/internship in which you are interested.)
  • Résumé: Attach a 1- or 2-page resume that highlights your education and experience.
  • Personal Statement: Attach a 1-page, 12-pt font, single-spaced statement outlining why you want to participate in the NYIE program, how it would benefit you, and how you would be an asset to a prospective employer.
  • Writing Sample: Provide a 3- to 5-page writing assignment (essay, report, etc.) that you submitted as coursework, free of grades or marks.
    • Recommendations: Provide 3 recommendations, one from your advisor or a faculty member and two from former employers. (Letters can be email, mailed, faxed or hand-delivered to the office)

After review of the application packets, the NYIE selection committee will interview select candidates. Once interviews are conducted, we may suggest résumé and cover letter changes and have students resubmit the revamped material. Students will be notified of their status in early-November.
