Financial Aid

The Department of Independent Study is not authorized to award any forms of student aid or scholarships. Students should check with the Financial Aid Department of their college or university to determine their eligibility to enroll in independent study courses using financial aid.

All University of Mississippi students who enroll in Independent Study courses are not considered fully enrolled for the purpose of qualifying for their Financial Aid stipend until they have taken their mid-course test. There are many additional restrictions and requirements placed on students who plan to use Independent Study courses in determining their enrollment status for Federal student aid eligibility. Generally a student has one calendar year to complete an Independent Study course and may purchase up to two three-month extensions of the deadline. A student that selects to use independent study course(s) to qualify for federal aid must adhere to very specific enrollment and completion deadlines. They will have a much shorter time to complete their correspondence course(s) and may only purchase one two-month extension after the completion date.

Please refer to this department's Financial Aid Policy and theFinancial Aid FAQ's for more information. If you still have questions, please contact:

The tuition for a correspondence course(s) is separate from the tuition charges for non-correspondence study courses, and will not be included in the calculation of fees for the semester, and is not included in the standard full-time student (12-19 hours) tuition that is charged for non-correspondence study courses. You are responsible for payment of the tuition fee, if payment is not received by the Office of Independent Study within one (1) month of your enrollment in course.
