INDEPENDENT STUDY PROCTORED TESTING POLICY
- A student who wishes to receive credit for an Independent Study course must take the final examination and, if applicable, mid-course
examination(s), under the supervision of an approved test site official (i.e., college or university testing center).
- In order to have testing information sent to your proctor, the student must submit an appropriate
Examination Form for every proctored
assessment required and for every course that requires proctored assessments. Failure to do so will result
in testing information not being sent to your proctor.
- A list of approved Examination Centers in Mississippi
is available on the web.
- A list of approved Examination Centers in other states
is available on the web.
Note: Independent Study exams are sent out to proctors twice a week - on Mondays and Thursdays. If a student does not
submit an Examination Form
for a proctored exam at least ten (10) working days
prior to their scheduled appointment, that student must understand that the Independent Study office may not be able to approve their
proctor.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY
- Primary responsibility - it is the primary responsibility of the individual taking the course to obtain a proctor, as
required, and to accurately communicate this information to the Independent Study office in a timely manner, using the
Examination Form.
- Locating a testing site - Though we have a long
listing of Examination
Centers in Mississippi and Examination
Centers in other states, it is impossible to have such listings
for sites all over the world. Securing a testing site will depend upon
one's location. Students can also use the Consortium
of College Testing Centers to locate a proctor.
a. The standard approach to obtaining a testing site is to locate the nearest community college, college, or university. Make contact
with a testing center, administrators at an institute of higher, or a private testing center. A secondary possibility, when colleges or
universities may not be available, is to contact the head librarian at a public library. If in the military, contact the base's
Learning Center or Education Officer.
b. For those who live in Mississippi, including those who attend The University of Mississippi and its branch campuses, we have a
long listing of testing centers in our state to choose from. This list may be viewed by clicking here:
Examination Centers in Mississippi.
c. For those who live in another state, we have a long listing of testing centers across the United States to choose from.
This list may be viewed by clicking here:
Examination Centers in other states.
d. Students on military installations may contact the base's Learning Center or Education Officer. If on a ship at sea, the ship's
captain or known education officer would be the point of contact.
e. Persons in a foreign country and unassociated with the military may contact the U.S. Embassy to seek proctor assistance. If the
student is in a foreign country with The University of Mississippi's Study Abroad Program, arrangements can be made with the Study
Abroad Office and the Office of Independent and Online Learning.
f. Once a proctor has been located, complete the Examination
Form and submit it to the Ole Miss Online office. A request form must be submitted for every proctored
assessment required and for every course that required proctored assessments.
- Deadline for the
Examination Form to the Independent Study office
- The Independent Study office should receive a student's completed Application Form when they have completed the eligibility
requirements, but no later than ten (10) working days prior to the scheduled appointment to be processed and to assure your testing
information arrives to your proctor in time. We will not be able to accommodate proctor requests within 48 hours or less of the
scheduled exam date and time.
- Fees Associated with a Proctored Exam - If you use a testing center, there may be proctor fees associated with that
particular site. In this case, it is the student's responsibility to pay those fees.
