Eligibility Requirements
A final examination is required of all students seeking academic credit.
No exceptions will be made to this policy. A student must spend
a minimum of two months on an Independent Study course before
requesting the final examination. This two-month period starts on the
submission date of the first lesson. The final examination may be taken
only after all other requirements have been met (all lessons graded, all
incomplete lessons resubmitted and graded, final examination request form
received by Independent Study.)
Students who need Independent Study grades to graduate or
to satisfy eligibility requirements for the subsequent
academic term must complete all assigned work and the
final examination in sufficient time for Independent Study
to submit the course grades to the Registrar's Office.
Students should plan their schedules to complete all
requirements, including the final examination, at least 30
days before they wish to use the credit.
Examinations are processed through the mail, and time must
be allowed for the procedure. Graduating seniors are
responsible for meeting the deadlines of their academic
degree programs.
In most Independent Study courses, a midterm examination is
required. A student must have submitted lessons according
to the course guide instructions to be eligible to
schedule the midterm examination. A number of factors
should be considered before scheduling the midterm and
final examinations. These should also be kept in mind when
attempting to meet deadlines for graduation or eligibility
requirements for an academic term. The following
procedures apply to both midterm and final examinations:
- Examinations should be scheduled as directed in the course guide.
- Eight weeks (56 days, including the registration date) is the minimum
time a student must be enrolled in a course before requesting the final
examination. The final examination must be completed on or before the
course expiration date.
- All lessons must be graded before taking the final.
- The final (or midterm) examination request form must be received
by Independent Study at least 10 days prior to the scheduled examination
date if test is not taken at the University of Mississippi. Allow sufficient time for mail delivery. Students residing outside
the United States should consider submitting the form via fax (662-915-1221)
or international air mail.
- Three weeks or more may elapse before graded examinations are returned
to Independent Study and grades are reported to The University of Mississippi's
Registrar's Office. Students should plan their schedules so that
they will complete all requirements, including the final examination,
at least 3 weeks before they wish to use the credit (i.e., grade posted
on UM transcript).
- We reserve the right to require any student to come to theOxford campus
to write an examination if there is any doubt about the originality
of the student’s work.
- Be sure to consult the list of
deadlines for University of Mississippi students.
