HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY
INTRODUCTION
Philosophy 301 should help you:
-----Discover the fundamental philosophical questions in the classical and medieval eras;
-----Appreciate the contributions of philosophers to proposals for their resolution;
-----Determine the relevance of traditional philosophy and philosophers to our own times; and
-----Become a better educated person through the study of the traditional philosophical issues
This course offers three (3) hours of academic credit.
MID-COURSE TEST AND FINAL EXAMINATION
The student will take a Mid-Course Test and Final Examination at a physical
location in a college or university setting. Detailed instructions and
Mid-Course Test and Final Examination applications are included in the online
syllabus.
The Mid-Course Test and Final Examination each will include a database component and an
evaluation component. The database component for the Mid-Course Test and
the Final Examination is a selection of questions from the "Review Questions" found
at the end of each lesson The function of the database is to ensure that
the student has an elementary knowledge of the ideas presented. Seventy
percent (70%) of the Mid-Course Test and Final Examination score will
come from the database component. The evaluation component is an
essay question requiring the student to apply the ideas under
study to some concrete problem, to determine how well the student understands these
ideas. Thirty percent (30%)of the Mid-Course Test and Final Examination
score will come from the evaluation component. The Mid-Course Test covers
only the materials in the first nine lessons. The Final Examination
database component covers only the materials in the final nine lessons.
The evaluation component of the Final Examination will cover the entire course.
COURSE APPROVAL
The course is approved by the chair of the Department of Philosophy and
Religion, College of Liberal Arts, of The University of Mississippi. The
instructor is appointed by the department chair.
INSTRUCTOR
Dr. Michael L. Harrington is professor of Philosophy and Religion and Chair of
the Department of Philosophy and Religion. He holds a B.A. from Davidson
College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Emory University.
