PHIL 101
INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY

INTRODUCTION

Philosophy 101, Introduction to Philosophy , is an introduction to philosophy by means of significant philosophical problems, especially public policy issues, arising in everyday life in these United States. It is designed to help you:

  • discover the fundamental philosophical questions embedded in the controversies of our times;
  • appreciate the many different proposals for their resolution; and so
  • become an enlightened citizen, able to contribute to the debates in the marketplace of ideas concerning the future course of human civilization.
Presupposing no previous work in philosophy, this independent study course uses contemporary materials presenting a variety of viewpoints to help you develop personal, well-reasoned positions on each major issue.

This course offers three (3) hours of academic credit.

MID-COURSE TEST AND FINAL EXAMINATION

The student will take a Mid-Course Test and Final Examination at a physical location in a college or university setting. Detailed instructions and Mid-Course Test and Final Examination applications are included in the online syllabus.

The Mid-Course Test and Final Examination each will include a database component and an evaluation component. The database component for the Mid-Course Test and the Final Examination is a selection of questions from the "Review Questions" found at the end of each lesson The function of the database is to ensure that the student has an elementary knowledge of the ideas presented. Seventy percent (70%) of the Mid-Course Test and Final Examination score will come from the database component. The evaluation component is an essay question requiring the student to apply the ideas under study to some concrete problem, to determine how well the student understands these ideas. Thirty percent (30%)of the Mid-Course Test and Final Examination score will come from the evaluation component. The Mid-Course Test covers only the materials in the first nine lessons.
