SECONDARY SCHOOL LITERACY INSTRUCTION: THE CONTENT AREAS
INTRODUCTION
Reading is a developmental behavior that is learned gradually and systematically by most individuals. Students, parents, and educators agree that the ability to read is of utmost importance in achieving an education. The majority of school subjects require an understanding of decoding and comprehension skills by students before mastery is achieved. The enlightened involvement of secondary teachers could result in a considerable contribution to reading improvement and general overall achievement in school that would carry over into adult life.
A majority of secondary teachers receive no training in reading instruction and consequently are unable to respond to the inability of students to get something from their textbooks. The concern is for both diagnostic and instructional techniques in content area instruction. Secondary teachers need to acquire the skills to be able to diagnose reading difficulties of their students as well as the understanding to enable them to prescribe appropriate materials and opportunities for student improvement based on the diagnostic evaluation.
This course will help the teacher or prospective teacher acquire these diagnostic and prescriptive insights.
This course offers three (3) hours of academic credit.
