FOUNDATIONS OF ELEMENTARY READING
INTRODUCTION
The primary purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with basic concepts related to teaching reading in the elementary grades. Empahsis will be directed to understanding how children learn to read and the concept of emergent literacy. The four basic word recognition skills and the most effective comprehension strategies will be described. An overview of the most common approaches used to teach reading will be covered. Other topics related to reading instruction such as voluntary reading and diversity in the classroom will also be included.
This course offers three (3) hours of academic credit.
MID-COURSE TEST AND FINAL EXAMINATION
The student will take a Mid-Course Test and Final Examination at a physical
location in a college or university setting. Detailed instructions and
Mid-Course Test and Final Examination applications are included in the
online syllabus. Information regarding tests and procedures can be found in General Information.
INSTRUCTOR
Dr. Martha Chambless is a professor of elementary education. She received her B.S.E from Arkansas-Monticello, her M.Ed. and Ed.D from the University of Arkansas.
