EDLS 301
CHILDREN'S LITERATURE, K-8
INTRODUCTION
Library Science 301 is designed to inform future teachers of the broad range of literature available for children from kindergarten through grade eight, and to stress its value to the child when this literature is effectively used in the classroom. It establishes criteria for choosing what children will listen to and read, and analyzes the basic elements of literature in an effort to broaden one’s ability to judge what is suitable for use with children. In addition to bringing future teachers an awareness of the proper presentation of this literature, it enables them to provide informed reading guidance for their pupils.
The student will read and examine a wide variety of various types of books appropriate for use in K-8; greatest emphasis will be placed on criteria for evaluating the literature and its value to the child.
This course offers three (3) hours of academic credit.
MID-COURSE TEST AND FINAL EXAMINATION
The student will take a Mid-Course Test and Final Examination at a physical
location in a college or university setting. Detailed instructions and
Mid-Course Test and Final Examination applications are included in the
online syllabus. Information regarding tests and procedures can be found in General Information.
