Environmental Chemistry
Purpose of the Course
Chemistry 202 is the second half of a two-part study of Environmental Chemistry. This course is designed primarily for the
non-science major who needs to fulfill the science requirements of
his/her degree program and for the intellectually curious person who wishes to gain a general knowledge of chemistry, the most relevant of all the sciences. Chemistry 202 has no prerequisite; however, throughout the course many references are made to
Chemistry 201. Environmental Chemistry may not be counted toward a major or minor in Chemistry by University of Mississippi students.
The course is made up of 20 lessons, the titles of which are listed on the next page. The
students expected to complete each lesson in the proper order before proceeding to the next lesson.
Most lessons consist of the instructor’s notes, a reading assignment from the textbook, and a writing assignment that must be completed and submitted to the instructor for grading through
the Department of Independent Study .

specified for Independent Study courses offered by the University of Mississippi to make them

The text will be used for both parts of Environmental Chemistry (Chemistry 201 and 202).
Almost all of the text will be studied, with only a few chapters omitted. The student is
encouraged, although not required, to read even the deleted chapters for his/her own information.
This course offers three (3) hours of academic credit.
MID-COURSE TEST AND FINAL EXAMINATION
The student will take a Mid-Course Test and Final Examination at a physical
location in a college or university setting. Detailed instructions and
Mid-Course Test and Final Examination applications are included in the
online syllabus. Information regarding tests and procedures can be found in General Information.
INSTRUCTOR
Dr. Charles Panetta holds a B.S. and Ph.D. He is a Professor Emeritus of Chemistry
