AH 101
ART APPRECIATION: WESTERN

INTRODUCTION

AH 101. Introduction to Western Art. For all students interested in acquiring an understanding of the visual arts. An introductory survey of painting, sculpture, and architecture in the Western world. (Will not count toward art major.)

The text, Marilyn Stockstad's Art: A Brief History, is an abbreviated version of her comprehensive survey, Art History, and designed specifically for individuals with little background in art. Works of art are discussed in the cultural, social, religious and intellectual contexts from which they emerged.

The aims of the course are:

    1. To develop a familiarity with the vocabulary of the visual arts;
    2. To visaully examine works of art as a means of understanding the aims of the artists who produced them and the responses of observers who view them; and
    3. To become familiar with characterisitic traits of the workds of various cultures and specific artists.

Through analysis of works of art, individuals develop confidence in their judgements and assessment of what is beautiful and valuable in a work of art.

This course offers three (3) hours of academic credit.
