ART APPRECIATION: WESTERN
INTRODUCTION
AH 101. Introduction to Western Art. For all students interested in acquiring
an understanding of the visual arts. An introductory survey of painting,
sculpture, and architecture in the Western world. (Will not count toward
art major.)
The text, Marilyn Stockstad's Art: A Brief History, is an abbreviated
version of her comprehensive survey, Art History, and designed
specifically for individuals with little background in art. Works of art
are discussed in the cultural, social, religious and intellectual contexts
from which they emerged.
The aims of the course are:
- To develop a familiarity with the vocabulary of the visual arts;
- To visaully examine works of art as a means of understanding the
aims of the artists who produced them and the responses of observers
who view them; and
- To become familiar with characterisitic traits of the workds of
various cultures and specific artists.
Through analysis of works of art, individuals develop confidence in their
judgements and assessment of what is beautiful and valuable in a work
of art.
This course offers three (3) hours of academic credit.
COURSE EXAMS AND FINAL EXAMINATION
The student will take TWO Course Exams and a Final Examination at a physical location in a college or university setting. Detailed instructions and Course Exam and Final Examination applications are included in the syllabus. Information regarding tests and procedures can be found in General Information.
INSTRUCTOR
Dr. Betty Crouther is an associate professor of art and holds a bachelor's
degree from Jackson State. She received her masters of fine arts degree
from the University of Mississippi and obtained her doctorate from Missouri.
