Court Reporting
Funded by:
US Department of Labor
Project Description:
This grant-funding is dedicated to the training of court
reporters in real time captioning services for the hearing-impaired
community. Current FCC regulations require captioning of all
new programming broadcasts by the years 2006. Realtime captioning
provides instant translation of spoken words into text, offing
the hearing-impaired community the ability to get news and
other vital information from live television, as well as providing
opportunities to allow hearing-impaired individuals to interact
in civic, professional, educational, religious and personal
activities. Funding will be used to train incumbent court
reporters through a number of intense classroom-style courses
held throughout the country and to help develop the curriculum
for court reporting students through a sub-grant from the
University of Mississippi to Hinds Community College.
