Another
school year is here and it's time to think about science
fair. While fairs are generally held in the spring it is
never too early to get started. The best projects usually
begin much earlier than the date of your school fair. Coming
up with an idea, doing research, conducting an experiment,
collecting data, and presenting the results in a professional/neat
format requires time and hard work. The rewards make the
hard work worthwhile for a number of reasons. The skills
and knowledge gained through experimentation; "doing
science" much like scientists do science; and having
an arena to present the study are invaluable experiences
that provide each participant a lasting lifetime memory.
For
those high school participants that win Best of Fair at
the region and state, the opportunities for winning money,
computers, and full scholarships becomes a reality as they
compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering
Fair (ISEF). This past year students from Mississippi did
exceptionally well at the Intel - ISEF in Lousiville, Kentucky
winning prizes that included full college scholarships.
The 2003
Intel-ISEF will be in Cleveland, Ohio and once again students
are expected to do well representing the state of Mississippi.
Below
are this year's registration forms for grades 1-6 and grades
7-12. Please read carefully the fair dates, deadlines, and
fair rules. If you require additional ISEF rules, judging
criteria, and/or forms please contact the Key Teacher at
your school. Also, ISEF rules, judging criteria and forms
can be found at www.sciserv.org/isef/.
Some of these items are no longer included in the registration
packet. It is the responsibility of the Key Teacher to make
sure these items are distributed.
The science fairs have various categories
for the different grade sections. See below for category
descriptions. Class 1 (grades 1-6) have 6 categories this
year, and select regional fairs will have two new categories
added for Class 1 only. Please contact the fair director
in your region to find out if these two new categories are
being offered for Class1. Class 2 (grades 7-12) have the
usual 13 categories.
If you have any questions please contact
your regional fair director, President of MSEF - Joe Sumrall
662-915-5310, email sumrall@olemiss.edu,
or Vice President of MSEF - Rusty Cooper 662-915-7283,
email rusty@olemiss.edu.
