The University of Mississippi
Conference on the Civil
War
"Understanding the African American Civil War Experience"
May 19 - 21, 2006
Sponsored by
The Department of History and
Division of Outreach & Continuing Education
The conference theme, Understanding the African American Civil War Experience, invites the submission of papers dealing with any aspect of African American life related to the Civil War, particularly the experiences of black men and women in both military and domestic spheres, North and South, whether free, enslaved or fugitive, and both during the war and the aftermath of war.
The conference is intended for a broad spectrum of Civil War professionals, students and interested non-specialists, and the successful proposal will sustain both scholarly and popular interest.
The conference will also feature a tour highlighting the Universitys association with the Civil War and local nineteenth-century African American history, as well as a visit to the Civil War Interpretive Center in Corinth, Mississippi, which emphasizes the significance of that citys freed black community during the war.
