About Non-Credit Classes
Non-Credit classes on the UM-Desoto campus are offered on site, unless otherwise noted. The campus is located at 5197 W.E. Ross Parkway off Church Road in Southaven. Contact Twyla Loftiss at twyla@olemiss.edu or (662) 393-1674 for more information or to register. The deadline for most classes is 48 hours prior to the program date.

Who May Enroll
UM-Desoto Non-Credit classes are designed for all ages, and do not require admission to Northwest or the University. Parents of children under the age of thirteen will be required to fill out a parental authorization registration form. If you have any questions about specific classes, please contact UM-Desoto before enrolling.

TEST PREP

ACT Test Prep

Instructors will help you prepare for the upcoming ACT test. A test packet is included in the enrollment fee. This is a one-day class, but we are offering it on two different dates. Please note your choice of date on enrollment.
NOTE: The deadline for registration is one week prior to the program date.
Dates: February 2 or March 23

Praxis Test Prep

Praxis Test Prep is divided into reading comprehension/writing and math sections. Instructors will help you prepare for the Praxis I exam. Materials will be provided.

GMAT Prep

Basic Cake Decorating – Part I

Decorating basics and design instruction will guide you through baking, icing, creating basketweave, roses and other icing flowers. Upon enrollment, you will be given a list of supplies to bring on the day of class.

Cake Detailing – Part II

In Cake Detailing, you'll learn some dimensional piping and borders, Gum paste Flowers and fondant. You will learn how to cover a cake with fondant, make the fondant bow, and to sculpt life-like flowers, ivy and leaves. Examples of flowers are the rose, stargazer lily, dogwood, Gerbera daisy and stephanotis. For this class, a person should have a basic knowledge of decorating cakes. Upon enrollment, you will be given a list of supplies to bring to class.

Quilting

This is a beginners quilting class. You will learn how to cut out, piece together and create 3 blocks during the 4-hour class time.You will also learn the history of each block learned and see the different projects that each block can become.

Calligraphy

Calligraphy means "beautiful writing." In this class students will learn how to use the tools of the calligrapher, see examples of historical and contemporary fine writing and learn to understand and write the italic letterforms. The class is taught with demonstrations and individual attention from the instructor. We will discuss how to choose the right pens, inks, papers, and other materials.
There is a $15 supply fee which will cover a calligraphy pen, special lined paper and handouts. Please bring a pencil, eraser and ruler. This is a one-day class but we are offering it on two different dates. Please note your choice of date on enrollment.

SELF DEFENSE

Karate

This is a beginner's martial arts/self- defense class, lasting for six Saturday sessions. Students will be working toward their martial arts certificate. You will gain valuable self-defense skills to feel safer in your environment, and enjoy physical exercise to look and feel your best.

AARP Driver Safety

This is the nation's first and largest refresher course for drivers age 50 and older that has helped millions of drivers remain safe on today's roads. You can expect to learn about current rules of the road, how to operate your vehicle safely in today's increasingly challenging environment and some adjustments to common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. AARP membership is not required and with completion of this course, participants 55 years or older will be entitled to receive a discount on their automobile insurance premiums for the following three years as mandated by Mississippi Law.

Fingerprinting

This class is designed to teach you the historical significance of our finger prints and how technology is making it possible to learn more and more about the profile of each unique print. You'll examine actual data from reports and learn to decipher the codes that lead to making personal identifications.

TRAVEL

Alluvian Hotel and McCarty Pottery Tour

We will travel to Greenwood, Miss., where we will tour The Alluvian and enjoy lunch at the Crystal Grill. (Enrollment fee does not cover the cost of lunch.) After lunch, we will travel to Merigold, Miss. and tour McCarty Pottery, with time to shop before heading home.

The Alluvian Hotel name has its roots deep within the region. The Mississippi Delta is considered an alluvial plain, a level land created by extensive amounts of mineral-rich soil deposited for centuries by the great Mississippi River. As lore would have it, Tennessee Williams once referred to the people living on this land as Alluvians. On hotel grounds are also the Alluvian Spa and the Viking Cooking School, all a part of the hotel tour.
