Cultural Outreach
The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture, edited by distinguished
faculty at The University of Mississippi’s Center for
the Study of Southern Culture, observes:
The American South is a geographic
entity, a historical fact, a place in the imagination, and
the homeland of an array of Americans who consider themselves
southerners. The region is often shrouded in romance and
myth, but its realities are as intriguing, as intricate,
as its legends.”
The Division of Outreach seeks to highlight and illuminate
the South’s rich culture through independent and partnered
programs on the campus each year. These programs explore the
heart of the blues presented by musicians such as Robert Johnson
and B. B. King; celebrate the insight into the human soul
shared by writers such as William Faulkner and Eudora Welty;
elucidate a history that is at once painful and proud; and
introduce or enhance new skills from a southern perspective.
