Credit Programs

The Division of University Outreach and Continuing Education, in conjunction with the academic colleges and schools of The University of Mississippi, designs and implements education programs for credit, certification, professional development, and personal enhancement. The Division supports the mission of The University of Mississippi by promoting lifelong learning through the development of diverse educational opportunities, commitment to quality, and dedication to service.

August Intersession

August Session is a two-week academic term that takes place in early August. It is designed to offer Ole Miss students the opportunity to earn up to three hours of academic credit toward the completion of their degrees between the summer and fall semesters. The dates for the 2006 August Session are July 31-August 15.

Dual Credit Program for High School Students

The University of Mississippi welcomes high school students who wish to take our courses for dual credit at their high schools, either by attending classes on our campus or by taking a course online.

Independent Study

Let us help you meet your goals - .sign up for an independent study course! Study at your own pace and on your own schedule. Enrollment is open to all interested persons at any time during the year. Courses offered through Independent Study are fully accredited through The University of Mississippi. Tuition and fees for a 3-hour course are $540. UM students who wish to enroll in Independent Study courses must have the written approval of their academic dean on their course application.

Whatever the situation, our high school is here to serve you as a curriculum provider and/or a provider of instructional services. Choose from 131 print-based courses. Our division also offers a whole range of college independent study and online courses providing students the chance to get a head start on college. All are available for individual or group enrollments.

Lott Leadership Institute

The Lott Leadership Institute for High School students seeks the nomination of outstanding high school students from throughout the Southeast for its summer program each year. The program is organized under the auspices of the Lott Leadership Institute, named in honor of Ole Miss alumnus and U.S. Senator Trent Lott. The institute is devoted to fostering leadership skills, particularly in young people.

May Intersession

May Intersession is a two-week academic term that takes place in mid May. It is designed to offer Ole Miss students the opportunity to earn up to three hours of academic credit toward the completion of their degrees between the spring semester and summer sessions.

Ole Miss Online

Ole Miss Online courses operate synchronously—or in step—with the University’s academic calendar and include students from a variety of places and experiences who learn together in Web-based courses. The University of Mississippi offers excellent support services: access to Web support specialists, electronic bulletin boards, e-mail accounts, library resources, and instructional guidance. We are committed to your success as a learner and that means preserving as much as possible the complete classroom experience, even though the class is delivered in a different manner.

JumpStart for Incoming Freshmen

JumpStart is a unique opportunity for incoming UM freshmen, providing the chance for them to come to Ole Miss during the August Session to begin their University studies, make friends and meet faculty before the majority of freshmen arrive. The program includes activities and experiences that encourage students to interact with each other wile learning to manage the new-found freedom and independence of college life. Dates for the 2006 JumpStart are July 31-August 15.

Study Abroad

The University of Mississippi has programs as short as three weeks to as long as a full academic year, in places as extreme as Fiji and as close as Mexico. If The University of Mississippi does not have a program that fits your academic and personal needs, the Study Abroad staff can help you investigate other universities’ programs as well. The Study Abroad Office at the University of Mississippi has developed a variety of opportunities to address the diverse needs of UM students. We work with many departments, administrative offices, and other units within the University to help students earn UM credit through study abroad while continuing to make substantial progress toward their degrees.

Summer Accelerated Studies (Grades 8, 9, and 10)

Summer Accelerated Studies gives students entering the eighth, ninth, and tenth grades in the fall of 2006 a taste of college life and possible credit toward high school graduation at the same time. Depending on grade level, students will explore the world and its cultures in Geography; flex their imaginations in Creative Writing; design a Power Point presentation; or investigate the earth’s delicate balances in Environmental Science. Several other classes also will be offered. The dates for the 2006 SAS session are June 4-29.

Summer College for High School Students (Grades 11 and 12)

The Summer College for High School Students provides opportunities for students entering the 11th and 12th grades in the fall of 2006 to explore academic interests, get acquainted with college life, earn college credit, widen their horizons, and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. The dates for Session I are May 29-June 27; for Session II, June 28-July 28.

The Office of Summer School offers five sessions to meet students’ needs.
May Intersession : May 15-May 27
Full Summer Term : May 30-July 28
First Summer Term: May 30-June 27
Second Summer Term: June 29-July 28
August Intersession : July 31-August 15

Teach Mississippi Institute

The Teach Mississippi Institute (TMI) is an alternative to the regular teacher preparation route for a Mississippi teacher's license in secondary (grade 7-12) education. Successful completion of both components of the Institute results in a standard, five-year renewable Mississippi teacher's license.

UM-Booneville

In partnership with NEMCC, The University of Mississippi at Booneville makes it possible for students to complete a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Busniess Administration on the Northeast Mississippi Community College campus.

UM-DeSoto

In partnership with NWCC, UM-DeSoto offers undergraduate courses in accountancy, business, education, nursing, paralegal, criminal justice, social work, and liberal arts, as well as graduate courses in environmental engineering and education.

UM-Tupelo

In partnership with ICC, UM-Tupelo offers undergraduate courses in accountancy, business, education, health management, paralegal, criminal justice, social work, and liberal arts, as well as graduate courses in engineering and education.

UM Writing Project

The University of Mississippi Writing Project is one of 160 sites of the National Writing Project and is a member with the seven state sites that form the Mississippi Writing/Thinking Institute. We serve a seventeen-county area of north Mississippi, offering credit, non-credit, and CEU (continuing education credit) activities that serve schools and teachers in meeting staff development and re-certification needs.

Winter Intersession

Winter Intersession, or Wintersession, is a two-week academic term that takes place in early January. It is designed to offer Ole Miss students the opportunity to earn up to three hours of academic credit toward the completion of their degrees during a portion of the five week break between the fall and spring semesters.

Workforce Development

The Professional and Workforce Development (PWD) programs help working adults acquire new, updated, or complementary skills needed to achieve or maintain proficiency in their current profession, earn noncredit educational certificates, prepare for professional certification examinations, qualify for promotion in their organization, transition into a new career, meet professional continuing education requirements, prepare for graduate entrance examinations, or return to the workforce. We also work with employers to bring many of these programs directly to their staff, either at Ole Miss or at the work site.
