Dates: June 4-8, 2007 and June 11-15, 2007

Although the American Civil War has long captivated our collective historical imagination, it is only within the last few years that historians have begun to apply new analytical approaches to interpret our most familiar and poignant national crisis. By reaching beyond the events and issues of the war itself, and by working to understand the effects of the war on those who lived and survived it, we begin to think about that period – now 140 years past – with renewed conviction of its relevance for us today. The workshop offers an opportunity to understand the Civil War and its legacy by exploring the memorial and commemorative activities of generations of Americans. Anchored at the University of Mississippi, in picturesque Oxford, workshop participants will also take a two-day, overnight excursion to visit Shiloh National Military Park, the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center and historic Holly Springs, Mississippi. The workshop welcomes applications from faculty of any discipline, both full-time and adjunct. Participants will receive a $500 stipend to help cover expenses. Travel supplements are available for those traveling long distances.
