Journey to Japan, July 27 - August 4, 2009
The Academic Traveler offers its first Asian adventure, Journey to Japan. Explore this fascinating country with Lance Herrington, adjunct assistant professor of art at the University of Mississippi. Many aspects of Japanese culture will be explored including history, religion, cuisine, art, architecture and contemporary society. Travelers will visit Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokohama, Kyoto, Nara and Osaka on this journey.
Highlights for the Academic Travelers:
- Visit Tokyo Tower and catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji on a clear day
- See the National Diet Building and the Akasaka Guest House
- Dine at Gonpachi Nishiazabu and Ninja Akasaka, featuring two variations of Japanese cuisine
- Visit the Edo-Tokyo Museum
- Learn how to make nigiri and maki sushi from a master sushi chef
- Tour the Kirin Beer factory and Toyota Corporation
- Explore the historic city of Kyoto, visiting the Golden Pavilion and Nijo Castle
- Visit Sanjusangen-do Temple which houses 1,030 standing Buddhist statues
- Feed shika, the resident tame deer, in Nara Park
- Explore Todaiji Temple, the world’s largest wooden structure
- Cruise on the Okawa River in Osaka
- Visit Osaka Castle and the Umeda Sky Building
- Enjoy a farewell dinner and an evening of karaoke
Journey to Japan program cost is $3495. The registration deadline has been extended to June 26th. Registrants must submit a $500 non-refundable deposit upon registering with the balance due on July 15th. Employees of the University of Mississippi can use payroll deduction and have the balance spread over up to 24 pay periods beginning in May.
Included in the program cost:
- Pre-departure educational material
- Pre-departure lectures on Japanese arts, culture and language
- All accommodations and meals
- All transfers to and from lodges and airports in Japan
- Bus and train transportation in Japan
- Baggage handling and transport
- Museum and historic site admission fees
- Round-trip air travel from Memphis to Tokyo and from Osaka to Memphis
Excluded from the program cost:
- Drinks with meals
- Transportation to and from the Memphis airport
