University of Mississippi Math Tournament

April 5, 2014

The University of Mississippi Math Tournament, sponsored by the Math Department, Division of Outreach and Office of Pre-College Programs, is an annual math tournament for the state of Mississippi and neighboring schools in the Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee areas. This tournament welcomes all teams from these areas to compete in a fun and scholarly atmosphere. The UM Math Tournament consists of two (2) tests – the individual and team tests. The next UM Math Tournament is scheduled for April 5, 2014 at the University of Mississippi's Oxford campus.

General Information:

Tournament registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. and will end at 9:45 a.m. in the lobby of Conner Hall. All teams must check-in at the registration table before competing. The individual test will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. If an individual arrives after the test has been administered, the individual will for forfeit this part of the competition.

Lunch will not be provided. The Food Court in the Ole Miss Student Union will be open for lunch, but not for breakfast. This option is probably best for lunch since you will not have to leave campus. There is a wide variety of choices for lunch, such as Burger Studio, Chick-fil-A Express, Magnolia Kitchen, Subway, Southern Tsunami Sushi, Topio’s, Toss It Up, and Zoca’s. The Ole Miss Bookstore in the Union will also be open if some of your students would like to browse and shop after lunch or grab of cup of Starbuck’s coffee.

At 1:00 p.m., the team test will be administered. In cases of a tie between teams, a tiebreaker round will be held at 2:30 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held shortly after the tiebreaker round at 3:30 p.m.

Registration deadline for the 2014 UM Math Tournament is Friday, March 28, 2014. Registration is available online using an online form.

To provide a better competition experience, the registration for events sponsored by the Office of Academic Competitions and Pre-College Programs has been changed.

Competition Rules

No cell phones or other electronic devices may be used in the testing room. Any electronic devices should be turned off or left with a sponsor. Students may not leave and then reenter the room during testing. Sponsors will not be allowed in the testing room during either round.

Individual Test

The individual round will be conducted in the morning session and will include no more than thirty multiple choice questions. These problems will cover material from high school courses such as algebra, trigonometry, and geometry but will exclude calculus.

We will provide pencils, scantron answer sheets, and scratch paper. You may choose to use your own pencils, but these must be #2. Put your name and school on the answer sheet. Mark your answers clearly, as tests will be machine scored. Incorrect answers do not incur any scoring penalty. Your score is the number of correct answers you provide.

Any ties in score will be resolved in the afternoon session. All students tied for a given place will be presented the same problem. The first to provide a correct solution will win the place. If more than two students obtained the same score, successive problems will be presented to those remaining until all places are determined.

Scholarships will be awarded to the top three individual places.

Team Test

The afternoon’s team problem-solving round will consist of up to ten problems, which may be discussed as a team. Questions in this round will assume a similar background as those in the morning session but will require more problem-solving skills and creative thinking. Clear presentation of solutions as well as correctness will be considered in scoring.

Each team will receive four copies of the test questions and a supply of plain paper in a labeled envelope.

Each team will write ONE solution for each problem. The solutions must be clearly marked with the problem number and the team label (matching the label on the envelope). All work submitted for grading should be placed in the team envelope and turned in together.

Scholarships will be awarded to each team member of the top scoring team.

The best way to come to the Oxford campus of the University of Mississippi from any direction is to come to Oxford on either Highway 6 (which is an east/west road) or Highway 7 (which is a north/south road), then take Highway 6 to the Old Taylor Road exit just south of the campus.

Exit Highway 6 at Old Taylor Road. Turn north and go approximately ¾ mile until Old Taylor Road dead ends at University Avenue. The Gertrude Ford Center for the Performing Arts will be directly in front of you. Turn left (west) on University Avenue, immediately cross a bridge, and then continue straight at the four-way stop to Lyceum Circle. You will veer right at the statue, the Lyceum and Connor and Holman Halls are visible at the opposite end of the Circle.
