and on goes the list of writers who are Mississippi’s
own—some even The University of Mississippi’s
own. The South continues to produce literature reflecting the
experiences unique to our region. Some of tomorrow’s
acclaimed Southern writers are high school students today. Are
you one of them?
Students who have a way with words can come to the Summer
College for a semester of intensive writing and at the same
time earn 7 hours of college credit. The program is designed to
offer students concentrated practice in writing their own work
and in analyzing their own as well as others’ writing.
Students take the following courses:
- English 318: Beginning Fiction Workshop is an introduction
to fiction through reading and writing short stories.
The 3-hour course is taught by English department faculty.
- ENGL 102, also taught by faculty, is a writing course on a
selected topic. It carries 3 hours of credit.
- EL 153: Sports Conditioning is a 1-hour course taught by
exercise science faculty who help students create their own fitness
development programs.
In addition to their course work, students will have opportunities
to visit with published writers, including the writers in
residence at Ole Miss and authors who visit Oxford during the
session.
Creative Writing Program students participate in the
Exploring sessions as well as the social and recreational activities
of the Summer College for High School Students.
Any student who has a 3.2 GPA on 15 academic courses in
the College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) or a minimum 25
ACT or the SAT equivalent and a 3.5 GPA on 10 academic
courses in the CPC is eligible. (If you are unclear as to how
The University of Mississippi defines the College Preparatory
Curriculum, please visit our Web site at

Preparatory Curriculum. One of the teacher recommendations
should be from an English teacher. Samples of the student’s
work are welcome but not required. In addition, applicants
must be recommended by their high school principals.
To apply, students should complete an application,
checking Creative Writing Program and the appropriate
session on the front of the application.
Costs for the Creative Writing Program include tuition,
room, meal plan and fees. Students admitted to the program
automatically receive a partial tuition scholarship. Some full
scholarships based on need and merit are available. Financial
concerns should not prevent a student from applying.
