HEALTH PROFESSIONS PROGRAM
First Summer Session:
May 29-June 27, 2006 |
|
Second Summer Session:
June 28-July 28, 2006 |
The Health Professions Program is an academic enrichment
program designed to foster students’ intellectual
and social development through an in-depth look at the
health professions. Students accepted into the program
will earn 5 hours of academic credit. (Students may attend
both sessions with adviser approval.) Students will take the following
courses:
- CHEM 101, a survey of chemistry, and CHEM 102, the
required laboratory for the course, offer 4 hours of credit.
These courses, while not part of the prescribed curriculum for
students preparing for careers in the health professions, provide
a base for the chemistry courses that are required.
- EL 153: Sports Conditioning is a 1-hour course taught by
exercise science faculty who help students create their own fitness
development programs.
In addition to their courses, students in the Health Professions
Program will attend special seminars offered by professionals
in various fields of medicine, pharmacy and dentistry
who can define the parameters of study in the health professions
and meet the individual needs of the students. Field trips
to health facilities in the area are planned.
Students in the Health Professions Program participate in
the Exploring sessions as well as the social and recreational
activities of the Summer College for High School Students as
their schedules allow. They are housed with the other Summer
College students.
To apply, students should complete an application,
checking Health Professions Program on the front of the
application. Any student who has a 3.2 GPA on 15 academic
courses in the College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) or a minimum
25 ACT or the SAT equivalent and a 3.5 GPA on 10 academic
courses in the CPC is eligible. (If you are unclear as to
how The University of Mississippi defines the College Preparatory
Curriculum, please visit our Web site at
www.olemiss.edu/admissions/policies and click on College
Preparatory Curriculum.) In addition, applicants must have the
recommendation of their high school principals. At least one of
the teacher recommendations should be completed by a mathematics
teacher or a science teacher.
Cost for the Health Professions Program includes tuition,
room, meal plan and fees. Students admitted to the program
automatically receive a partial tuition scholarship. Some full
scholarships based on need and merit are available. Financial
concerns should not prevent a student from applying.
