ENGINEERING PROGRAM

First Summer Session:
May 29-June 27, 2006

The Engineering Program, in its fifth year, is designed to expose high school students to a variety of engineering areas to assist them in making informed decisions about possible college majors. The program is designed for the exemplary high school student interested in applied mathematics and science.

All students enrolled in the Engineering Program will take 7 hours of course work:

  • CSCI 111: Computer Programming is the introductory course for a major in computer science. The 3-hour course introduces computer programming, problem solving and algorithm development, as well as the programming language Java.
  • Engineering 100: Introduction to Engineering is a 3-hour course introducing the student to several areas of engineering, including electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical and computer engineering. Members of the School of Engineering faculty contribute to this course.
  • EL 153: Sports Conditioning is a 1-hour course taught by exercise science faculty who help students create their own fitness development programs.

Engineering students participate in the Exploring sessions as well as the social and recreational activities of the Summer College for High School Students. They are housed with the other Summer College students.

To apply, students should complete an application, checking Engineering Program on the front of the application. In addition, they must have the recommendation of their high school principals. Any student who has a 3.2 GPA on 15 academic courses in the College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) or a minimum 25 ACT or the SAT equivalent and a 3.5 GPA on 10 academic courses in the CPC is eligible. (If you are unclear as to how The University of Mississippi defines the College Preparatory Curriculum, please visit our Web site at www.olemiss. edu/admissions/policies and click on College Preparatory Curriculum.) In addition, applicants must have the recommendation of their high school principals. At least one of the teacher recommendations should be completed by a mathematics teacher or a physics teacher.

Cost for the Engineering Program includes tuition, room, meal plan and fees. Students admitted to the program automatically receive a partial tuition scholarship. Some full scholarships based on need and merit are available. Financial concerns should not prevent a student from applying.
