INFORMATION ABOUT INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (ILI)

This institute also satisfies the OSL requirement

The Key To Student Achievement Is Instructional Leadership!

  • Would you like to earn 70 SEMI credits this year?
  • Would you like to become a better instructional leader?
  • Do you have inexperienced administrators that need a quick immersion in the best school leadership experiences?
  • Do you have beginning level administrators who need additional credits to move to career level? (OSL)
  • Do you have experienced administrators who are stuck in old, ineffective ways of leading schools?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then you could benefit from the Instructional Leadership Institute. The Instructional Leadership Institute will increase the capacity of school leaders to improve instructional practices–practices that can lead to higher performance by all students. The Institute focuses on what school leaders need to know and be able to do in order to provide the guidance and direction for sustained instructional improvement.

Trainers: Doug McQueen, Susan Rucker and others will offer the 5-day Instructional Leadership Institute (in a 1-2-2 day format) in the locations below.

Many of you have attended the Instructional Leadership Institute and have benefited from your participation. Many participants have called the ILI the best school leadership seminar they have ever attended. It should be. It is based on extensive research into the best leadership practices of business, military, and education. This research, conducted by the National Institute for School Leadership, makes this seminar the most soundly based leadership activity for school administrators. You may know of others in your district who could benefit from attending; please let them know about this opportunity.

Topics covered in the Institute

  • Distributed leadership
  • Analysis and use of data to drive improved instructional practice
  • Effective practices in literacy and mathematics instruction
  • How to promote knowledge through learning communities
  • How to sustain improvements using leadership and systems thinking

The Institute includes five days of classroom activities, supplemented by several hours of independent reading and online work in preparation for class and time for journaling personal thoughts and reflections.

The application activities, complementing the core knowledge gained in the Institute, include diagnostic tools, a case study, a close textual reading, small and large group discussions, gap analyses and assessments, and follow–up actions designed to improve instruction in the classrooms.

Each participant that successfully completes the Instructional Leadership Institute (ICI) will receive 70 SEMI credits for the Mississippi Department of Education

INFORMATION ABOUT INSTRUCTIONAL COACHING INSTITUTE (ICI)

The Instructional Coaching Institute is designed to help principals and school leaders learn to coach faculty members to embed standards-based education deeply into the systems and practices of their schools. As part of a state's or a district’s reform strategy and professional development plan, coaching on instruction is one of the most effective means of fostering improvements and realizing results. Participants practice how to coach others in “learning how to learn” through relationships, collaboration, and commitment, with a focus on increasing the quality and effectiveness of classroom teaching.

The Institute includes three days of classroom activities, supplemented by two hours of online learning, as well as three hours of independent reading in preparation for class and an hour of journaling personal thoughts and reflections.

Beginning with a research foundation on the principles of teaching, learning, curriculum, and good instructional practice, the first day of the Institute explores how to become an effective instructional coach and introduces a five-step process adopted by the National Institute for School Leadership (NISL):

  1. Focus on Specific Aspects of Student Achievement
  2. Gather and Analyze Evidence
  3. Conduct a Coaching Conversation
  4. Design an Action Plan
  5. Monitor an Action Plan

After examining this model for instructional coaching, participants spend the next two days learning how to analyze instruction in the classroom and applying coaching techniques to individual and group settings. Participants have multiple opportunities to role-play and to practice coaching skills in simulations, as well as to discuss and reflect on strategies for establishing a coaching culture in their schools.

As a result of the Coaching Institute, participants will understand the effects of instructional coaching on teaching and learning, implement the five steps of instructional coaching in a variety of coaching situations, practice using effective coaching skills and tools, and generate ideas and action steps for incorporating a coaching culture in their schools.

Participants will be provided with a NISL handbook on coaching, several texts (including the The Heart of Coaching by Thomas Crane), and a CD of relevant materials to prepare for each day of the institute. There will be some pre-work assigned.

Each participant that successfully completes the Instructional Coaching Institute (ICI) will receive 30 SEMI credits for the Mississippi Department of Education.
