If you have the majority of skills listed
below, then you are ready for online learning. It's
that simple.
- I can turn on and shut down my computer.
- I can connect to the Internet.
- I can contact my Internet service provider for technical
assistance.
- I can use a mouse to click, double-click, drag and
drop.
- I can use a word processing program (ex. Microsoft
Word) to enter text, format the document’s appearance,
change spacing and fonts, use spell check, and adjust
the margins.
- I can type at a moderate speed.
- I can use a file manager to find and save files.
- I can use a file compression program (ex. Winzip).
- I can start software programs such as web browsers
(ex. Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer).
- I know which programs are currently running on my
computer and how to switch between them.
- I can learn new software programs by exploration
and trial and error, as well as with tutorials and
manuals.
- I know how to access online library resources, including
scholarly databases and journals.
When using a browser, you will need to know how to
use its basic functions:
- I can enter URLS in the location bar.
- I can move back and forth between pages.
- I can refresh or reload pages.
- I can follow links.
- I can download and save a file on my computer.
- I can send and receive email messages.
- I can attach and retrieve a file to an email message.
- I know how to copy and paste text from a word processor
into an email message.
- I can search for information on the Internet using
search engines such as Google.
- I know how to enable and disable a pop-up blocker.
